They all fall silent as he explains that, while looking for a misplaced penny jar under his porch, he overheard his older brother Billy ( Casey Siemaszko) and friend Charlie Hogan ( Gary Riley) discuss how Billy found the body of Ray Brower, a kid who had recently gone missing. The others make light fun of him until he asks if they want to go see a dead body. The fourth of their group and the butt of many jokes, portly Vern Tessio ( Jerry O'Connell), begs to be let in the tree house, saying he has important news. His father resides in a mental institution but Teddy speaks highly of him for serving in WWII. Teddy, rather eccentric, is recognizable by the mangled remains of his right ear which his mentally unstable father held down to a hot stove top. Chris comes from a family renowned for their dishonesty and abusive nature, which gives him a bad rap despite his tough but kind disposition. Each boy has his own story and a reputation to follow. Gordon "Gordie" Lachance ( Wil Wheaton) is playing cards inside a tree house with his best friends Chris Chambers ( River Phoenix) and Teddy Duchamp ( Corey Feldman). He is overcome with a wave of nostalgia and begins to narrate the story of when he was 12 years old and the time he first saw a dead human being. Then, if you gentlemen don't mind, I'd like to finish this game before I start collecting my goddamn Social Security, okay? You're up Billy.A man ( Richard Dreyfuss) sits in his car reading the headline of a newspaper article about a man who had been stabbed to death at a fast food restaurant. It's nothin'! It's nothin'! It's nothin', right? What's with you homos? You guys've been acting psycho all day. Hey, you can't quit! We've only played three innings! That would be a non-official game! Why don't you tell me something I don't know, asshole? You shouldn't have gone for a wooden one. He died almost instantly.Īlthough I hadn't seen him in more than ten years, I know I'll miss him forever. Chris, who had always made the best peace, tried to break it up. Just ahead of him, two men got into an argument. Last week, he entered a fast food restaurant. He went on to college and, eventually, became a lawyer. He enrolled in the college courses with me and, although, it was hard, he gutted it out like he always did. I'm never gonna get out of this town, am I, Gordie?Ĭhris did get out. Last I heard, he had spent some time in jail and was now doing odd jobs around Castle Rock. Teddy tried several times to get into the Army, but his eyes and his ear kept him out. I heard that Vern got married out of high school, had four kids, and is now the forklift operator at the Arseno Lumberyard. Happens sometimes, friends come in and out of your life like busboys in a restaurant. I'm gonna rip your head off and shit down your neck!Īs time went on, we saw less and less of Teddy and Vern until, eventually, they became just two more faces in the halls. You call my dad a loony again, I'll kill you. No wonder you're acting the way you are with a loony for a father. He took your ear and he put it to a stove and burnt it off. Yeah? I'd like to see you climb over this fence and get me, fat ass!ĭon't you call me that, you little tin weasel peckerwood loony's son. Hey, you! Stop teasing that dog, you hear me! Stop teasing him! Sonny, I'm gonna beat your ass, teasing my dog like that! Ha ha ha! Come on, Choppy! Bite my ass, Choppy! Bite my ass! Bite shit. Now he said, "Sic'em, boy!" But what I heard was, "Chopper! Sic balls!"
